An outstanding unique appearance of airport terminal complex as any building of unusual design attacts attention and awakes interest of people. Because of the human psychology, the people are always attracted by any extraordinary and good-looking things, and such phenomen is largely used in designing the state-of-the-art terminals in view to increase their commercial value component. The commercial efficiency of buildings worldwide relates in many respects to their architectural expressiveness and such statement can be evidenced by various case studies.

Among the significant manifestations of the world financial crisis that impact the civil aviation industry and consequently the airport economy is the air traffic reduction. Just in the Russian Federation the air traffic level has dropped by 9.4 %.
Such reduction is mainly caused by decrease of people’s real earnings, increase of unemployment rate, impairment of business activity and respectively decline in population travelability.
However, it is critical the air traffic starts increasing since October of 2009.

The Kharkhov Airport reconstruction project being implemented now serves a good example of successful and mutually beneficial public-private partnership.
At present this is the most successful project in the airport business industry in Ukraine.

Discussed in the publication is the application of SMART airport management system in developing the airport business and planning the short- and long-term efficient steps to increase the airport profits and passenger handling quality.
